Mysuru: The heritage capital of Karnataka
When I took off from Delhi, my offer letter stated I need to be at Mysore. When I waited at Majestic Bus stand for Mysore bus conductor was calling out the name "Mysoor Mysoor Mysoor", I double checked if this bus goes to Mysore. On the way, I read about this pronunciation and it was derived from Mahishasur. Say this 10 times as fast as you can and it will get shorten to Mahisur. No, I am not making fun of Kannada but this is a true story.
The city was named after Mahishashura. It was getting devastated by this demon and only after that Devi Durga killed him. Durga is a familiar name in north India. Here, in Mysore, she is known as Chamundi Devi. A dedicated shaktipeeth like Vaishno Devi is present here as well. This temple is Chamundeshwari temple.
Mysore, earlier written as Mysuru in our history texts was known to me because of the Tipu sultan story. Historically this region has been capital and still widely known for its cultural heritage. It's a very small town, with a low population. Geographically this region is hilly, there are troughs as well as ridges that's why only diesel buses, which was not usual in Delhi. Mysore has separated out its industrial area, and here we have Infosys, taking the largest space. There are other mechanical and technology spaces out there. Infosys has decorated and conditioned the place as well. Mysore has wide flora and fauna. It rains heavily, summer and little winter is also there. It has its own municipality. They run their own buses apart from Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) throughout the city. One can easily explore the city roads by bicycle but it will take one week to enjoy each of the historical places and try out local cuisines there.
Not a capital, but still heritage capital of Karnataka
Now Bengaluru has become the capital of the state, but culturally Mysore will remain the capital of Karnataka due to its annual event Dasara. It is Dussehra in the north, which they have shortened to Dasara. It's a bigger festival than Diwali here. It marks the decorum of the Royal house known as Wodeyars. They carry out the Jamboo savari. Elephants are called Jamboo here. Like how Durga pujo is famous in Kolkata, Mysore is famous for its 10 days long Dasara. Luckily, I have been a part of it. I got a chance to live in this city for a shorter time. Apart from that, there are many historical places that remark it as one of the culturally rich heritage across Karnataka.
